Local Lib Dem MEP Sharon Bowles laid a poppy wreath today in remembrance of the brave men and women who gave their lives to defend peace and freedom.

Remembrance Sunday commemorates the Armistice signed between the Allies and Germany in Rethondes, France, on 11th November 1918 - a ceasefire which effectively ended the First World War in Europe.

Sharon Bowles said: "It is humbling to think of the millions of people who were cut down in their prime. It is a stark reminder of the need to preserve peace between the nations of Europe."

In 1952 the European Coal and Steel Community (ECSC) came into being to strengthen ties within Europe and to help prevent another disastrous war between France and Germany. Fifty seven years later the EU has ensured that Europe remains united in its commitment to peace and stability.

Sharon Bowles said: "The author L.P. Hartley once wrote; 'The past is a foreign country: they do things differently there.' With this in mind, Europe's past has been turbulent but a spirit of co-operation and a commitment to working together has prevailed. This is why I believe in a strong and united Europe."

Since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan began over 300 British servicemen and women have lost their lives.

Sharon Bowles said: "I hope this sombre day reminds people of the enormous sacrifice made by those who have served and who are currently serving in the armed forces today and of our Government's duty to do what is right by our armed forces."
